Boots, pp. 4, 99; Clyde S. Boots Memoir: on Eli Boots ‘he had a
younger brother, Martin, who enlisted in the Confederate Army
for 6 months, serving his time, and was discharged; he returned
home and a band of guerillas decided Eli Boots must die; a
delegation was ordered to get him & hang him — as soon as Martin
could get away he notifed his brother of the danger — 4
guerillas were nearer than he but by calling he attracted his
attention & got him away; they rode 20 miles to a Union Army
encampment, who returned, fought, some guerillas were wounded &
4 taken prisoner; he remained with the Union Army for a short
time, finally taking his family, parents & brother Martin to
Iowa, who later served the Union was captured, imprisoned and
exchanged’; “History of Saint Clair Co., MO”: ‘Martin S. Boots’
p. 1128: ‘to Mo in 1853, farmer, 1861, 6 months in Confederate
cavalry; July 1862-1865, 39th IA Infantry (8 months a
