Martin, along with one daughter, came down the Missinewa River on a raft from Zenia, OH, Green County and went ashore where the small park, located at River Dr. (Road) and Euclid Ave meet in Marion, Indiana. He applied for acres of land from the government, brought his family there, and started a mill on the Missinewa River near Jalapa. Martin even held school for the settlers' children in his log cabin for years. He and David Branson donated acres of land to create what is now Marion,IN. Boots donating land on the present west side of the Courthouse and Branson on the east. Martin died in his chair in his home, a one-story brick house located at Second and Garfield Streets in Marion at the age of 65 years. Boots Street and Martin Boots Junior High School were named after him in Marion.
