Joseph Boots is living with his daughter Flora and son in law John Harlan. He is white, male born April 1835 so 65 years old and a widower. He was born in Ohio, his parents in Pennsylvania. He is a stone mason who was out of work for 4 months during the year. He can read, write and speak English.

------------------------

"Descendants of Adam Boots" [LDS film#1033425] by Clyde S. Boots, p. 387: (b. 1 Apr 1835, Randolph Co., IN') besides children listed, '2 other girls, died at birth';

Boots Family Chart (by Clyde S. Boots): 'died probably near Hampton, IA';

"Descendants of Hans Adam Stieffel" by Sherrin Winn Rooney [2001]: marriage date & deathdate '4 Oct 1920';

postulates 10 children, 2 of whom are 'daughter' [1 of these is apparently Flora, the other not known to available sources so not indicated as a child here];

1880 Butler Co., IA census (Pittsfield township) [E.D. 109; Sh. 5; ll. 1+]: age 47; 1900 Butler Co., IA
census (Pittsford township) [E.D. 69; Sh. 10; ll. 67-70]: age 65;

widower; stone mason - with daughter, Flora Harlan and her family;

"BLACK HAWK COUNTY IOWA MARRIAGE RECORDS": 'Boots, Joseph Redout, S. A. 28 Oct 1854 book A2 page 9';

"Susie Martin-Rott" (rootboun@tampabay.rr.com) [Tue Mar 30, 2004] to: "Lewis Ellingham" re: "Iowa Boots genealogy": 'I don't know that any of the first 3 listed died as infants. Do you have documentation of this? - reference is to Clyde S. Boots saying 1st 3 children all "died as infants" - Nancy clearly did not die as an infant as she appears on the 1870 census at age 14 with the family in Delaware Co IN p 12 (enumeration date is not filled in):

1870 Federal Census Liberty Twp Delaware Co IN [lines 38-40 and on to next page which is stamped as page 579]: 96 96
Boots, Joseph 25 M W farmer $2400 $410 b IN
Boots, Sarah A 32 F W keeping house b IN
Boots, Nancy A 14 F W born MO
Boots, Mary E. 12 F W b Missouri
Boots, Rhoda J 8 F W b Iowa
Boots, Isaac 4 M W b Iowa
Boots, Laura 1 F W b Indiana

Laura has disappeared by 1880 when she should have been 11, but Nancy would have been 24 so could have disappeared due to moving out of household or marriage. This does however show us that Laura would most likely have been born between Isaac and Rachel Malena. However, what is more interesting is that Lola Maude Boots, who should have been about 10y old in 1870 is NOT listed with this family on the 1870 census. The 1870 census also shows Nancy and Mary E as born in MO. That's because Lola was not born until 21 Mar 1883;

1880 Butler Co., IA census (Pittsford Twp Butler Co IA):
Joseph BOOTSSelf M Male W 47 IN Mason PA OH
Sarah BOOTSWife M Female W 45 OH Keeping House ME FRANCE
Elizabeth BOOTSDau S Female W 16 IA Keeping House IN OH
Isaac BOOTSSon S Male W 13 IA Farming IN OH

Flora BOOTSDau S Female W 6 IN IN OH

It is assumed that Joseph Mann and his wife Sarah died in Butler Co as they are buried in Dumont Cemetery in Dumont Butler IA. Researcher Larry Desaire indicates that Nan (Nancy) Boots, daughter of Joseph & Sarah died in 1956 in Black Hawk Co IA. However he does not provide any source for this information or a married name. The only Nancy Boots on the 1930 IA census is of the wrong age to be this party and Boots is her married name. I agree that she did not die as an infant based on being age 14 on the 1870 census, but she would have been 100 years old to have died in 1856 as Larry Desaire says. This is POSSIBLE but I question his unsourced data. And there is a connection to Black Hawk Co as her sister Lola Maude Kephart resided there.';
