specified; obituary [local newspaper, Mon., 6 Jan 1975]: ‘Harry
A. Pingry, who as a boy witnessed the start of the Cherokee
Strip race, died early Sunday morning in Grandview Osteopathic
Hospital at the age of 90. Born June 15, 1884, in Silverdale,
Kan., son of Willliam and Eva Pingry, he watched as his parents
made the run into the Cherokee Strip. His father staked a claim
on what is now the Ponca City-Blackwell shortcut. Pingry
attended the Happy Hill School in Lincoln County in 1896, after
helping haul and saw the logs for the new school building. On
Sept. 5, 1906, he married Mabel Bacon at chandler. Pingry
pursued several vocations in his lifetime. For three years he
operated a meat and produce store in Wellston. In 1909 he staked
160 acres in New Mexico near what is now Tucumcari. Later he
moved to North Hollywood, Calif., where he worked as a street
car conductor. Pingry returned to Wellston and purchased a farm.
Then he moved to Ralston and was a deputy sheriff and town
marshal. Pingry was well-known in Ralston for the two 38’s he
wore, as well as a shoulder holster. He was nicknamed “Two-Gun”
in addition to being known as “Hollywood Harry.” Moving from
Ralston, he lived in Ponca City for a short time and then moved
to Osage County where he resided for 20 years before returning
to Ponca City. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Grace
Memorial Chapel with Dr Evens T. Moseley, retired Baptist
minister, officiating. Survivors include three sons, Howard
Pingry, 415 South Third, Leo Pingry, Kildare, and Olen Pingry of
Sulphur; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His
wife preceded him in death on Oct. 4, 1967, and by his parents
and two brothers. The family will be at the home of Pingry
granddaughter, Mts Dean Conway, 1501 Hudson.’
